In a recent report, the United Nations (UN) warns about the threat of an increase in homicide rates worldwide due to climate change and the resulting increase in temperatures, especially in Africa and America. As the data from an article in the newspaper El País points out , the year 2023 has been a year that broke records regarding sudden increases in temperature. While in the Horn of Africa region there were five continuous seasons of drought, they were followed by floods. Simultaneously, in various areas of Latin America, the drought intensified significantly. In northern Argentina and Uruguay, accumulated rainfall between January and August decreased between 20% and 50% compared to the historical average. Along the same lines, the UN Global Study on Homicides found a possible relationship between certain types of homicides and climate change. We tell you the details here: Climate change: beyond conventional environmental impacts The results of the Global Homicide Study underline that global warming, already evident with an increase of more than one degree in the Earth's average temperature since 1980, could intensify violence, although sufficient data is still lacking to establish a direct correlation.

between both phenomena. UN experts highlight that the continents most affected by this possible relationship between climate change and the increase in violence would be Africa and America. The report also notes that the increase in the homicide rate due to a greater number of days of dangerous heat would increase in these regions. The consequences of this phenomenon, such as food insecurity, displacement Morocco Phone Number List and ecosystem degradation, are considered serious and far-reaching. It is estimated that the most affected populations will be those in island nations and low-income countries, which are already located in hot regions and lack the resources to adapt to or offset the negative consequences of climate change. Despite historical trends that suggest a gradual decline in the global murder rate, excluding war and terrorist attacks, the report highlights that population growth could result in an absolute increase in homicides in the coming years, even if the percentage rate continues to decrease.

Highlights surprising connection between climate change and homicides SDGs and the climate crisis: The report emphasizes the importance of target  of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which seeks to significantly reduce all forms of violence. However, he warns that achieving this goal will be a challenge, considering demographic, socioeconomic and climatic factors. Although the annual number of homicides recorded worldwide peaked in 2021, the report highlights the long-term trend of the gradual decline in the homicide rate, which fell from 6.9 to 5.8 per 100,000 inhabitants between the year 2000. and 2021. The UN emphasizes that addressing this issue will require concerted efforts at a global level to mitigate the impacts of climate change and work towards a more sustainable and secure future.
