There has been a lot of talk about the metaverse. However, it is not a new concept. The topic gained a lot of traction starting last year, when Mark Zuckerberg changed Facebook's name to Meta. But the metaverse emerged at least 30 years ago. The first written reference to the subject was in the novel Snow Crash, by Neal Stephenson, in 1992. In the novel, the relationship between virtual and physical realities is one of the main themes. Within the metaverse, the main character, Hiro, is a samurai, who fights a virus. While, in the physical world, he is a pizza delivery man.
Long before cyberspace was talked about, Stephenson described in this book what a completely virtual world would be like. Technology has always provided us with the evolution, mainly, of the media. Now, it makes the concept of the metaverse a reality, where you can interact, forgetting about physical barriers. Although until today it would have been developed through video games, now the metaverse will be present in different sectors. If we Special Data are still used to interacting from afar in our remote work, this will change in a few years. In the work environment, the metaverse will be very important even for the productivity of workers. But what is the metaverse? The word "metaverse" is an acronym made up of the terms "meta" and "verse." While "meta", from Greek, means "after" or "beyond", "verse" refers to "universe".
Therefore, we speak of a universe beyond the one we know. In this case, the metaverse is a virtual ecosystem made up of different worlds and is three-dimensional. We can access it through special devices, such as virtual or augmented reality glasses, and interact with other users. The metaverse is like a second reality. Each user has a character or avatar and can interact with each other: studying, working, playing, shopping, and much more. This universe already moves billions of dollars around the world. The expectation is that in 2024 it will reach 800 billion. What is an avatar? Just like the concept of the metaverse, the concept of avatars also emerged in Neal Stephenson's novel and comes from video games.
