As a result of the  study  “Plastic recycling among Mexicans 2023”,  developed by Vida Circular, it was identified that a primary aspect for citizens to participate in plastic recycling is the existence of collection centers. The survey revealed that 7 out of 10 Mexicans would deposit their plastic containers in recycling centers if more were installed, which would increase recycling rates, not only for PET, which currently has the highest recovery rate (60% in 2022, according to ECOCE), but also for other valuable materials such as HDPE (shampoo or detergent containers, among others). According to official data from the  National Institute of Statistics and Geography  (INEGI), in 2021, 477 collection centers operated by municipalities and federal entities were reported, where an average of 55,664 kilograms of recyclable materials were received each day, of which 17% corresponds to PET. These centers operated by governments are part of the functions of the State as a provider of basic services and must be responsible for the collection, storage, transportation, reuse, treatment and final disposal of solid waste.

However, due to the importance of responsible waste management, various organizations, associations and companies (large and small) have joined the dissemination of local collection centers that allow the storage and recovery of recyclable materials such as plastic. . And which are subsequently sent to recycling plants for correct treatment and disposal. An example Belgium Phone Number List of this is Ecolana, an initiative that developed a virtual map so that citizens and companies can locate collection centers. Until June of this year, they had a registry of around 3,000 centers, which can be consulted through their website and an application for mobile phones. For its part, the ECOCE association also has a National Directory of Collectors that facilitates the search for collection centers in the Mexican Republic. In addition, it has various recycling programs in public spaces such as the exchange of waste and packaging for pantry products or items made with recycled material. Although these collection centers are already part of the recycling value chain, there is still an opportunity for more consumers to get involved in this practice that benefits the environment.

According to the study, the existence of collection points closer to the home would be an important key incentive to increase plastic recycling for 41% of Mexicans. Companies such as IMER, ALPLA, PLANETA (Tabasco New Ecology Plant), and many more throughout the country, are developing their own collection centers as part of their Circular Economy and sustainability strategies. Currently, the PLANETA recycling plant develops 18 collection centers in the South-Southeast of the Mexican Republic that, in addition to providing an environmental service, will benefit the economy of the region. Furthermore, the survey, in which ALPLA and P&G México also collaborated, revealed that 53.3% of Mexicans consider collection centers as the appropriate place for plastic packaging to be effectively recycled and not end up on the streets or in natural ecosystems. Therefore, it is essential to consider them a substantial opportunity to contribute to eliminating waste and pollution through the delivery of products and materials for reuse.
